GLA

Immediate Past Project

Groove Leadership Academy (GLA) was established well before Atlanta Achieve One came into extistence. In fact, it was the desire to take Groove Leadership Academy further, to reach more high school men and progress to the next level, that's why Atlanta Achieve One LLC was conceived.

Groove Leadership Academy took young men of the future as far as they can grow by exposing them to a variety of activities that enhance their high school experience and following them into their college years, offering additional support and guidance.

The young men of GLA were also instilled with the sense of giving back to the community. Volunteer projects played a major role in their activities. During the project years, the young men volunteered for a United Way women's homeless shelter, St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Atlanta Mission and other organizations.

SCHOLARSHIP

At the end of  high school scholarships are

awarded to deserving students who decide to further their college or technical school careers. The scholarships can be used to augment their tuition or to purchase books or other sustaining material.

To date, Atlanta Achieve One has helped thirty young men with scholarships. This has been accomplished with donations and fundraising efforts of local chapter members of Atlanta Graduate Chapter of Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, Inc. The ultimate goal is to increase the number of young men attending higher education institutions and to increase the scholarships to support them in their decision.

CAREERS

Career choice is important to leading a successful, sustaining life. The young men who were a part of Groove Leadership Academy were given the opportunity to explore career choices before leaving high school.

The young men visited radio stations, architectural firms, shadowed entrepreneurs, heard from airline pilots (as shown below) and various other professions, many of which are represented by members of the founding organization,

PAST PROJECTS

Before working with the young men at Groove Leadership Academy, for fifteen years the volunteers assisted at risk young men in the foster care system. Without a doubt these young men were on the verge of dropping out of school and out of society. In fact, they were in danger of either joining gangs or becoming incarcerated.

The volunteers worked with the young men to help fill the void created when they were removed from their homes for long periods of time, sometimes until they reached adulthood.
